PROFILE OF EBONY BAE

At a Glance
Ms. Ebony BAE is a native Korean teacher from Seoul. She graduated with Bachelor in Arts. She was trained at the Korean Language Education Centre (KLEC), Sogang University in Seoul and the Berlitz Language Centre in Singapore. She was the founder of the Korean Language Program at National University of Singapore (NUS) Extension in Singapore.

Professional Career
In early 2000, when only one or two Korean language courses were offered in Singapore, she paved the way for more professional programmes in Singapore by writing textbooks and developing curricula. She continues to teach engaging courses in Perth through her own institution.

  • She introduced a 3-level Korean Language Programme at the Cambridge Language School around late 1999 and later at the Japanese Association Singapore and the government-funded tertiary institution, Singapore Polytechnic. The programmes were well-received and provided the foundation for future development in her career.

  • In 2004, she worked with the NUS Extension (NEX) the continuing education arm of NUS. At NEX, by popular demand, she expanded the 3 basic courses into a 6-level Korean Language Program (KLP). The KLP allowed students to pursue further studies in Korean universities.

As the 1st Head/founder of KLP, she set up the Korean Language Proficiency Test Centre and was a key negotiator and coordinator between Korean and Singaporean institutions. She introduced scholarships and immersion/exchange courses.  In the process, she recruited and trained additional teachers, native and non-native, to support KLP. Her 5th book, “Conversational Basic Korean Textbook” was published by NUS Publisher in late 2005 and reprinted in 2006.

  • In 2007, Ms. Bae was also one of the committee members when NUS collaborated with the Korean Foundation to start a Korean language programme in NUS.

  • She was the assistant principal at Korean School of W.A, and taught second-generation Korean children from Feb. 2010 to 2011.  She also taught Korean at (Polytechnic) TAFE College for a few years.

  • The Korean Language & Cultural Education Centre Pty Ltd (KLCEC) was incorporated in Oct. 2010 in Perth. Since then KLCEC has offered regular and short Korean courses.

  • She was the director of "Korean Language Cultural Immersion Program Limited" for the Adoptee Korean children class in Perth from 2018 till 2019 then the class was under KLCEC PTY LTD till 19 Oct. 2020.

  • She was nominated for a 2021 Commonwealth Bank Teaching Award in Australia.

Teaching Style
Ms. Bae’s unique and fun teaching style is highly regarded by her students and this is the reason her classes are so popular and students have to enrol in advance!

In contrast to the traditional way of teaching language, her teaching is fun and effective using the “Communicative Approach” and “Task-Based learning” methods. Understanding the learning needs of beginners who do not have a natural learning environment, she focuses on providing them with a lot of opportunities to speak up in class and helps them to recognise and produce foreign sounds.

Ms. Bae infuses energy into her delivery and keeps her students on their toes through numerous group task activities and interactions. There is never a dull moment and learning is enjoyable. Her passion to promote Korean culture means that language learning is not just semantic exercises but is imbued with inspiring moments when Korean culture, people, food, costume etc are introduced to learners.
